The paper analyses the situation, the mechanism of action and the actors of the unorganised wholesale agri-markets in Bulgaria. The impact of the state (legislation, regulations, infrastructure, control, etc.) on some traditional and well-developed sub-sectors of Bulgarian agriculture is examined. The conclusion is that unorganised agri-markets can be used successfully by farmers when there is a sufficient number of buyers at a cost-recovering price, farmers have storage facilities and are able to wait for higher prices. Simultaneous fulfilment of these conditions has been found to be difficult because they are very rare.
